NYSDEC Region 1 requires
that you obtain a permit
to walk on their lands
on Long Island. This
permit is meant to
facilitate a means of
communication between
the trail users and the
DEC. If a Ranger
encounters you walking
on DEC land without a
permit or parking
without a permit
displayed in your car’s
windshield, you are
liable to a fine. This
is not why you should
get a permit. The
reason to obtain a
permit is that if a
large number of hikers
show interest in walking
DEC lands, it indicates
to the DEC (as well as
to our elected
officials) that trails
are deserving of
resources. Go to the
“Links” page of
www.hike-li.org,
click on “DEC permit
info.” Or call
631-444-0273.
