Follow Montauk Highway
two miles east of the
Hither Hills Overlook
parking area to the
Montauk Recycling
Center. There is a
gravel-covered parking
lot here. From the
parking area, walk
towards the highway and
look for the opening to
the “Parkway Trail”,
then head east. The
opening is a tunnel into
green, not to be
confused with the
private driveway
opposite the parking
area. After a 5-minute
walk you will reach the
Paumanok Path; turn
left. Continue up a
mild incline for a
breathtaking view of
Fort Pond Bay.
I continued following
the western section of
the Paumanok Path. This
section of the path
first goes east and then
north before it resumes
its westbound
direction. The trail
descended into the
protected “canyon” with
unusually lush plant
growth. I followed a
“shelf cut” trail out of
the canyon. Where the
trail intersects a woods
road, I turned left
(heading south) to cut
across the eastward
eccentricity in the
Paumanok Path. If you
are afraid of loosing
your way, turn around
and head back the way
you came. I would
recommend that you take
Charles Whalen’s East
Hampton Trail Guide
(call 324-1127) and a
compass for this hike.
